FAQ
What is the purpose of this project?
This project has two purposes: (1) to test whether or not Stellate Ganglion Block is an effective treatment for the symptoms of PTSD and for how long and (2) to examine how SGB is related to neurocognitive function, sleep, alcohol use, anxiety, depression, PTSD, mental illness/psychological distress, neurocognitive performance, and symptoms of tinnitus, as well as general physical and mental functioning.
What is a stellate ganglion block?
A Stellate Ganglion Block, or “SGB,” involves an injection of a local anesthetic into the Stellate Ganglion which is a group of nerves in the neck that help regulate the body’s “fight or flight” mechanism.
What does this have to do with PTSD?
There is good evidence suggesting that SGB can help treat the symptoms of PTSD. The goal of this study is to provide information about how long the improvement in PTSD symptoms lasts and to examine whether SGB is related to other behavioral and physical health issues.
Do all participants receive the SGB?
Yes. In this study, all patients will be receiving a SGB.
Do I have to take any online assessments?
You will also be asked to complete a clinical interview via phone before your procedure, and six and 12 months after as well. You will come to the Research Coordinator’s office about an hour before the SGB procedure to complete a questionnaire and neurocognitive assessment on a laptop computer and then return to the office to do the neurocognitive assessment two more times soon after. You also will be asked to complete follow up assessments via the internet at two, four, six, nine, and 12 months after your procedure. Your participation is voluntary, though- you do not have to answer any questions you do not wish to answer, and you may withdraw from the study at any time.
Are there any incentives being offered to participate?
Yes. You will be given electronic Amazon.com gift cards for your participation during off-duty hours in each stage of the study. These gift cards range in value from
$25 to $75
depending on the task. The total amount you will be eligible for is
$595
in Amazon.com gift cards.
